Civil society central to the future of our countryside - Leader of the opposition joins national debate

The Leader of the Opposition, Rt Hon David Cameron MP, spoke of his vision for the future of the English countryside on Monday, 12 May.

A civil society approach, grounded in community and social values and working along side economic activity, was the key-note theme of David Cameron’s speech delivered at the annual CPRE lecture.

Following his speech, a panel discussion was held to discuss the ideas David Cameron presented. Panel members included Elinor Goodman, from the Commission for Rural Communities; Michael Coupe, from CPRE’s Policy Committee; Rt Hon Oliver Letwin MP, chair of the Conservative Party Policy Review; and Shaun Spiers, CPRE’s Chief Executive.

What future for the countryside?

This blog is based on a discussion pamphlet produced following a debate on land use we held at our 80th anniversary conference last year. It sets out some provocative proposals about a possible future vision for the countryside.

The pamphlet is intended to provoke debate and doesn't represent current CPRE policy. But it does point to crucial questions facing the countryside over the next twenty years.
